Payment Fraud Is Moving Upstream, and Visa Just Bought the Data to Follow It
What's happening
Visa has agreed to buy Israeli behavioural biometrics and fraud intelligence firm BioCatch for $2.4 billion in cash, acquiring the company from funds advised by Permira and other shareholders. BioCatch uses AI and machine learning to analyse application, behavioural, device and network signals in real time, and Visa says the deal will fold those behavioural, device and biometric signals into its cyber, fraud, risk and security offerings. Visa positions the purchase as a move to stop fraud "upstream," helping detect account takeovers, scams and AI-enabled financial crime earlier in the customer journey.
