What's happening

Mastercard says more than one in ten online shoppers will routinely use AI agents to buy products by 2030, and the company has launched tools to help merchants connect products and payments to those agents. Mastercard's new Agent Connect service links merchants, AI agents, digital platforms and payment providers through a single integration while letting merchants control pricing, fulfilment and customer relationships. Mastercard and Visa are also working with Ant International on a Know-Your-Agent interoperability framework to help identify and onboard AI agents across networks, as the payments industry considers how agentic shopping could undermine the traditional "top of wallet" card dynamic.

Why it's trending

Big payment networks are moving from prediction to product and standards, because merchants and issuers need integrations and rules before AI agents start transacting at scale.

contrarian take

If AI agents are going to buy your groceries by 2030, merchants should be the ones to keep the buy button, not hand it over for free to whichever agent wins consumers' trust.
