California Governor Mobilizes Expert Panel to Strengthen AI Safety Laws
What's happening
California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order on Friday (Sept. 18) to convene national experts and produce a guide for the state to reinforce and strengthen laws covering artificial intelligence safety and security. The panel is intended to accelerate implementation of new AI rules in California. This move sits alongside industry and global efforts: OpenAI urged the U.S. to lead development of global technical standards including for recursive self-improvement, CEOs Sam Altman and Dario Amodei called for global guardrails at the UN, and Anthropic, Google and OpenAI are working to launch an industry standards body by year-end or early next year.
