GPT-5.6 Sol, along with Terra and Luna, will launch publicly this Thursday
What's happening
OpenAI is rolling out the GPT-5.6 family publicly, launching flagship Sol plus Terra and Luna; the rollout began July 9 following a limited preview and is being made available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API with global availability continuing over the next 24 hours. Sol is presented as the frontier reasoning model (including a Sol Ultra variant noted by users), Terra is described as a balanced model delivering previous-flagship performance at about 2x lower cost, and Luna is positioned as the fastest and most cost-efficient option. Users report immediate impressions: faster performance, greater autonomy, and Sol finding substantive improvements in large codebases (one user reported Sol identified 47 improvements and implemented changes in 10 minutes). The release also shipped related realtime and voice capabilities, including GPT-Live-1 and gpt-realtime-2.1 with lower p95 latency.
Why it's trending
Multiple posts and a weekly recap show a coordinated public rollout and fast user testing feedback, so attention spiked as availability expands now.

- GPT 5.6 Sol XHigh is REALLY Good
Cant believe Im actually posting this because I have not been the biggest fan of GPT models (actually had stopped using them completely) for coding compared to Claude but I am truly surprised and impressed.
r/OpenAIJul 12 - Chatgpt 5.6 Sol have clearly higher IQ based on my test questions.
I’m seriously impressed - ChatGPT 5.6 clearly has a higher IQ than 5.5, at least based on the IQ test puzzles I threw at it. Honestly, there wasn't a single puzzle it couldn't solve! Just a few examples (none of which 5.5 could handle): This one it solved pretty much instantly (42s).
